It was an honor to be invited to return to the Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica to teach a seminar on board governance. We had enjoyed studying Spanish there in 1979, and returning for a visit, 19 years later in 1998. We were both able to go again, now 18 years after our last visit. I presented the two-day seminar to a small group of board members, executive directors, and non-profit staff members. Shelly gave a challenge to a group of women gathered by our dear friends, Luis Fernando and Sandra Calvo.

The language school has grown a lot over the years, but was still recognizable from our studies there a life-time ago. School Director, Julie Chamberlain, gathered some of the school's board members and representatives from 12 other local Christian non profits to study board roles, responsibilities and practices. I've had follow up correspondence and a Skype consultation with attendees since leading the seminar in late May.

After the seminar we spent a couple of days with the Calvos then headed to the coast for three nights at one of our favorite Costa Rican beaches. Shelly lost her engagement ring there in 1979 (That's not why its a favorite!), and we were able to stay at a much-upgraded version of the same hotel that we got to know when we were first studying Spanish. It is right next to a National Park, which, thankfully, has not changed in the beauty of it flora and fauna since we first discovered it.
