Lost Creek Wilderness

The Volkhardt guys got away last weekend for a quick backpacking trip to the Lost Creek Wilderness area. It was the first time the three of us had ever backpacked together. Actually we were four. Barney the Min Pin came along and had as much fun as the rest of us. He did great for being 56 in dog years!

The Goose Creek Trail that we hiked starts in a section of the Hayman burn area and quickly moves down along the creek and beyond that was spared in the 2002 fire (largest fie in Colorado history). The area's geology is fascinating, filled with enormous boulders that have worn away from large cliffs of conglomerate rock over the ages. In some places the huge boulders have covered the creek, hence the name "Lost Creek Wilderness." One of the most interesting features is where the water resurfaces as a full-fledged creek.
